Paddleboards in use on Claytor Lake

When the hot summer days are calling and you are looking for something to do on the water, Pulaski County has something to suit everyone’s interest whether it is a need for speed, a leisurely paddle, or sitting poolside. There is something for everyone: Claytor Lake State Park; the tranquil Gatewood Park Reservoir; The New River; the pool at Randolph Park. Yes, Pulaski County can truly satisfy all water sports.

Many of us find there is nothing more enjoyable than getting on a boat or a jet ski and exploring the shores of Claytor Lake State Park. The 4500 acres of beautiful waterway are an aquatic treasure tucked away in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The water invites you to enjoy everything the lake has to offer: water skiing; wakeboarding; paddle boarding; kayaking; fishing. The lake has something for everyone!

When you want to escape or you just long for the peace and quiet of a serene lake experience where you can become one with nature in an ecofriendly environment, you will find that special place deep in the mountains and surrounded by a National Forest, a place called Gatewood Park. This campground and reservoir allows paddle craft and electric motor boats, keeping it ecologically friendly. Rentals are available through Mountain 2 Island, and, if you’re lucky and are there at the right time, you might be able to enjoy a concert on the water.

There are other times when you find the New River calling you. You’ll find many places where you can float, kayak, canoe, or fish in the moving waters that flow through the area. The New River brings all the communities together in the Valley. It is our common experience, the love of the river that we all share and participate in some form of fashion throughout the New River Valley.
