Think Outside with Virginia State Parks

You will find plenty of programs, events and activities at Virginia State Parks. Our 37 parks have thousands of campsites, hundreds of cabins, more than 500 miles of trails and convenient access to Virginia’s major waterways. Trails, picnic shelters, family lodges, meeting facilities, festivals, concerts, nature programs, and cultural happenings... the list goes on and on. Pulaski County is fortunate enough to have two Virginia State Parks right in their own backyard. Claytor Lake and New River Trail both offer adventure and relaxation for every age.

At Claytor Lake State Park you can draw inspiration from the lakeside setting. It is ideal for swimming, camping, hiking and picnicking. Claytor Lake is known for sport-fishing and boating, along with a full-service marina providing docking slips, supplies, fuel, boat rentals and refreshments. The Water’s Edge Meeting Facility is perfect for receptions, reunions, and weddings (packages available).

Claytor Lake State Park is one of the few parks that feature exclusively waterfront cabins with docks. Three lodges and 15 cabins overlook the 4,500-acre lake, offering visitors a scenic retreat. The historic Howe House has interactive exhibits describing the ecology of the lake and the surrounding areas.

New River Trail State Park offers a 57-mile linear park that follows an abandoned railroad bed. The park parallels the scenic and historic New River for 39 miles and passes through four counties and the city of Galax. The trail’s gentle slope makes it great for visitors of all ages to hike, bike and ride horseback. The park’s Foster Falls area offers guided horseback trips; canoe, tubes and bike rentals; boat launches; gift shops; and a horse arena. Fishing is popular, and primitive campsites dot the trail. Except for a two-mile section, the trail is available for horseback riding. Equestrian campsites are available.

Rentals are available at the Foster Falls Boat and ike Livery:

There is something for everyone at Virginia State Parks. Whether you are after a relaxing picnic or a two-week vacation, leave life’s daily pressures behind and reconnect with nature and your family at a nearby state park.
